Autonomous Province of Trento / Trentino

Presentation of the Region

The Trentino strategy for territorial development is based on three key factors: research, training and innovation. These key words translate into projects that have made the Trentino innovation ecosystem a national and international point of reference. This is realised mainly through the creation of synergies among the Autonomous Local government, the territorial education system, research organisations and industry. Thus, resulting in an integrated system that makes efficient use of major public and private investment in R&I (about 335 million euro per year, 1.8% of GDP) and long-term structural policies. ICT (key enabling technology), materials research, neuroscience, nanotechnology, biotechnology, genomics, agroindustry, environmental science and physics – both theoretical and applied to health and space – but also human and social science and the cultural environment are focal areas for R&I in Trentino.

RIS3 Priorities

The Trentino higher education and research system represents an example of excellence in the field of research, innovation at the national and international level. It can count on major investment in research and effective synergy between the Autonomous Local Government, the university and companies and institutes in the area.
It indeed sets out to act as an integrated system of training and research, characterised by a high level of specialisation in different disciplines, such as key enabling technologies (ICT), the study of materials, neuroscience, nanotechnology, genomics, food and agriculture and environmental science, but also the humanities, social science and cultural disciplines.
Trento is an affiliate partner of EIT Digital, acting as an Italian co-location centre in the European Institute of Technology’s European network of excellence operating in the field of information and communications technology.
Alongside research organisations, there is the recently set up HIT- Hub Innovazione Trentino – the consortium established by Trentino Sviluppo, the University of Trento and the Kessler and Mach Foundations to encourage the transfer of technology, innovation and the development of new entrepreneurialism in research.
