Navarre

Presentation of the Region

Navarre is situated in the North of Spain, at the western end of the Pyrenees, where it shares a 163-kilometre stretch of frontier with France. It has a land area of 10,391.08 square kilometres.

Navarre is a European crossroads between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, and connects Spain up with the rest of Europe. Almost unique in Spain, Navarre brings together three different bio-geographical regions: the Alpine to the northeast, the Atlantic to the northwest, and the Mediterranean to the south. Over the few kilometres that separate north and south, you can experience a whole kingdom of natural and cultural diversity which is quite astonishing, given the size of the region. Landscapes with marked contrasts, traditions, languages, and a diverse and rich artistic legacy, all of which has been carefully looked after without taking our eyes off the future… Navarre is the gateway to the Santiago Way and a land that knows how to enjoy its food.

Although being a relatively small region, Navarre has one of the most advanced economies in the country. Navarre has a diversified economy and a strong industrial sector. The industrial fabric currently plays a major role in its economy, representing more than 32% of GDP. Almost one out of every three euro of gross added value is generated by industry. More than 140 foreign industrial multinational companies located in Navarre. A great place to invest and grow your business!

RIS3 Priorities

In order to achieve the vision, lines of work are defined, which reflect business opportunities as well as the specific impact that green and digital transitions will have in the different systems and businesses.

The six thematic priorities are described including the vision of the future agreed upon by the different stakeholders, aiming at a transformation aligned with the new socio-environmental challenges.

1. Electric and connected mobility
2. Healthy and sustainable food
3. Green energy industry
4. Personalised medicine
5. Sustainable tourism
6. Audiovisual industry

By adopting the S4 model, Navarre includes sustainability as a key factor of the smart specialization. Navarre can become a European reference for sustainable growth not only because of the need to respond to the major challenges of the fight against climate change, but above all because Navarre has key business and technological strengths and capabilities in fundamental areas of sustainable transition such as mobility, energy and food. The S4 also includes the digital transition as an instrument for companies be competitive in the global market.

“The S4 is the agenda of regional economic transformation to become a reference region in Europe in sustainable and digital economy committed with people and territory”
