    The 3D-printing pilot project of the Vanguard Initiative organised a two-day event on 22 and 23 February. During the technology tour on the first day, a group of 31 participants visited the Flemish 3D-printing company Materialise. After an introduction into the activities of the company, the group visited the production facilities and got a glimpse of the different services the company offers. In the afternoon, the participants visited the 3D-printing facilities of Sirris in Liège, the Belgian collective centre for and by the technological industry.

    In January 17-19 2017 the Vanguard-regions Basque Country, Catalonia, Lombardy, Skåne, South Netherlands and Tampere travelled to Porto for an intensive working programme within the framework of the S34Growth project and the project activity On-Site-Deep-Dive (OSDD).

    On November 7-8, Brussels was home to several High Level meetings organized by the Vanguard Initiative (VI). These High Level Meetings aimed to strenghten the commitment of VI to a stronger and successful interregional cooperation, to contribute to the revitalisation of Europe’s industry and to deliver results having concrete impact on sustainable growth and job creation.

    The Vanguard Initiative Bioeconomy Pilot was present at EFIB 2016, the market leading annual event in Europe for Industrial Biotechnology and the Bioeconomy, this year in Glasgow Scotland. In the showcase theatre four of the pilot’s cases for joint demonstration presented the current state fo affairs on Lignocellulose Refinery (Biobased Delta & IBioIC), Biobased Aromatics (VITO), Turning (Waste) Gas into Value (Flanders Biobased Valley) and Biogas beyond Energy Production (Lombardy Green Chemistry Association).

    From 8 to 10 June 2016 the Week of Innovative Regions in Europe (WIRE) took place in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Vanguard Initiative was , during several parts of the program, presented as a promising example of interregional collaboration. The network was offered the opportunity to organise a ‘hosted by’ session during this conference, which was co-organised by Brainport Development and the EC’s DG Research & Innovation.

    On June 1 and 2 the Smart Regions conference took place in Brussels. During this conference the European Commission launched three Thematic Smart Specialisation Platforms which have to make sure there is an integrated approach and support framework for the implementation of regions’ Smart Specialisation Strategies in Agrofood, Energy and Industrial Modernisation, which are the central themes of this first series of platforms. Vanguard Initiative was buzzing throughout the two-day conference. The network was repeatedly mentioned, for example by European Commissioner Ms.

    Under the topic “Cross-regional collaboration for new industrial value chains : lessons from experience and needs for the future”, the session will aim at sharing various experiences in cross-regional collaboration for industrial transformation, identifying bottlenecks and emerging needs, and paving the way towards future policy developments.

    The session will gather high level speakers from the European Commission the Vanguard Initiative, and other European projects, who will exchange views in a lively discussion.

    The first months of 2016 have seen an unprecedented intensity of activities within the Vanguard Initiative. The most visible demonstration of this successful commitment was the gathering of over 400 participants at the Vanguard Initiative matchmaking event on 25 February. It is often said that involving companies is the hardest challenge facing activities initiated at the political level.
